My first hiking trip in Hong Kong has allowed me to see another side of Hong Kong. Never knew Hong Kong has so many breathtaking scenic views around the islands!

The name of the mountain is called "Rock Hit by Lightning" for a more literal translation of name in Chinese. A legend was told that there used to be a large rock up at the tip of mountain. But a lightning struck the rock in halves, with the other halve rolled partly down the slope.

DETOUR 2011, Hong Kong

I did feel like I took a detour this weekend...a detour around Central/SOHO district in Hong Kong. It was a lot of walking around on the narrow streets of the area, like a tourist exploring this side of Hong Kong with its historical landmarks.

Well, the main reason I went in the area was for the DETOUR event, an exhibition event of recyclable things that are reused for sustainable designs and exhibitions. It's good to see the generation of 1980s are into doing sustainable designs for the environment benefits. I've always felt that residents in Hong Kong are not as dedicated about recycling. There are a lot of public propagandas but most don't follow about separating the plastics, the metals, and paper from trash...

Modern art is not really my thing. But it's amazing to see how recyclable materials are being reused to create something else. Besides the exhibition, of course there was a also a fair of handmade designs from jewelry and canvas shopping bags to creative printing and cards, just so reminded me of the Indie Mart and Renegade fairs back home...

The event was held at the Former Police Married Quarters on Hollywood Road, which was one of the historical building which housed married police and their family lived in around 1950s - 1960s. I doubt there was any renovations were done after they moved out from the looks of the buildings. Nevertheless, the original look of the buildings does give it character and nostalgic feel.

Around the area, a lot of the residential buildings of the 1960s-1970s still remain.

But more boutiques, modern art galleries have sprung up alongside. Much similar to a fusion dish of western and Hong Kong culture, the traditional and modern, giving the neighborhood an unique flavor and character.

But a downside: it was hard to find a decent, local quiet cafe...the afternoon would have been perfect if there was a cup of good coffee in hand.

But fortunately, a delicious place was discovered. With noodles and traditional desserts, in Hong Kong flavors.

A dessert discovered which is now a favorite: glutinous balls sprinkled with peanut and coconut bits served hot...chewy and sweet with every bite, a comfort food felt like a warm, familiar embrace.

Home sweet home, San Francisco!

Ahh...it was great to be back home in San Francisco for the past few weeks. Happy catch up times with family and friends. It didn't feel like I was away for too long coming back; much things have been the same here. It has only been nine months, yet it did feel like a long time when I was in HK.

The weather was good most of the time I was back. Few rainy, foggy days. More sunny, warm days in mid-October, as we are near Halloween....it'll be wintery weather once Halloween passed.

Most importantly, I made sure I ate food that I couldn't have in Hong Kong! Peruvian food at La Mar: cau cau, a dish of seared scallops, clams, mussels and tiny potatoes in an aji amarillo and mint broth with caramelized onions risotto...

Macarons at La Boulange...the best I've had: Cessin violet and pistachio.

I definitely miss the vibe of local coffee shops...sigh...guess it'll be a search for coffee shops when I go back to Hong Kong.

And my Peet's coffee...

Anyhow, I know that I'll return to San Francisco soon!

Sai Kung, Hong Kong

Sai Kung has become one of my favorite places in Hong Kong. It feels like a different world away from the busy, crowded Hong Kong. Haven't realized there are so many scattering islands around Hong Kong. If only I have the time, I would probably take a boat tour around...that'll definitely be on my to-do list.

Did I mention it's such a beautiful weather today?? At 32 celsius, it's hot but there's always a nice breeze...

Sai Kung is also known for delicious and fresh sea food. In abundance around Hong Kong and caught by fishermen.

And I found my favorite shop...a boutique shop called 吉光片羽...from the business card it's Final Fragments . Design and style reminds me of Japanese Muji. Simple, petite, and fresh.

And a cute little restaurant I have yet to try!

And how about this barbecue oven?? just put a glass top over it and you can use it as a table!

I know. I haven’t blogged, as I plan to do more often as one of my new year’s resolutions. Have focused too much on work and school. That didn’t leave me with much time for blogging, updating my etsy website, enjoying artsy crafts. But at least, one resolution down.

I’m finally closed enough to be counting down. Counting down to the end, but at the same time, the beginning of something else. I feel like I’m finally seeing a speckle of light, though from a distance, in a long tunnel - I’m almost near the exit!

It has felt like a long journey. A bit tired. A bit restless for something new to begin. But I’m glad that I’ve made this choice. I have learned a lot along the way, met and worked with some of the interesting and intelligent people, and coming to know myself – how I work, how I see others, what I learn from seeing others and what I need to achieve.

Though I’m counting down now, there are some more things I need to do before I officially reach the exit. And this would take some more time. But as I go, that speckle of light will become bigger and bigger.

I've already not living up to one of my new year's resolution - spending more time on creativity and etsy shop...maybe year's resolution is just too hard. just too hard to keep motivated. being sick with the cold didn't help either. maybe i should just start with monthly resolution. maybe.

Rainy January's over. but it may be another rainy February....but at least, there is Lunar New Year to look forward to. another start. I then can begin my year's resolution. again.

My new year's resolution 2.

There are so many arts and crafts I would like to do, try out, and learn. photography, interior designing, wire wrapped jewelry and PMC rings. Things I know I'd enjoy. But there are always things or excuses that come up. and I missed those classes or didn't have time for it.

This year. no more of those excuses. I'll make time for it. In fact, I just signed up for a wire wrapped jewelry class on January 2nd! New year. new inspiration!!

My birthday passed. Christmas day just passed. Now, counting the days for a new year and the beginning of a new decade (another decade?!)

While catching up on my blog reading, I came upon decor8's post on New Year's resolutions. I don't make New Year's resolutions. because I know I don't keep it long enough to accomplish it so I don't bother. but this year, I think I need resolutions. I need to think about goals and things I want to accomplish this upcoming year. for a meaningful year.

I've been thinking a lot. of the past. of my future. rather it be career goals, personal goals, or where I want to live and work at. maybe it's because I've lived a quarter of the century, or it's the start of a new decade, or it's from my reading of Tuesdays with Morrie right now that made me think and wish I'm doing more. doing more than just school and work.

My first resolution: Stay in good health and be more fit. Eat healthy and exercise.
That's a resolution that most people have on their list every year. and a resolution that usually don't go as planned. mmm...that'll be my challenge to keep this resolution.

Next resolutions? I'll need to put in more thought about it and blog about it next time.

Not sure if there's such a thing. at least not the mess in my room now...which looks like a "paper" war had occurred in the eve of my finals. Now, just less than a week till xmas, my list of to-dos is...well, not much have been crossed off. The top thing on my list - xmas/gifts shopping which I haven't started. But thank goodness, there's the Renegade Craft Fair in the city this weekend which I'll be going tomorrow. Yay for handmade craft!

Beginning to enjoy the holiday!

As soon as I walked out of the classroom after taking my last final, it started to feel like Christmas! Well...more like, I'm much more in mood for the holiday spirit now that I'm on break from school (though not from work).

Especially after today's Xmas lunch for work at Gary Danko's, I'm even more bubbly with holiday spirit! Xmas is one of my favorite holidays. I just enjoy the festivity, gatherings with family and friends, the holiday sales, the feeling of bundling up in the chilly weather while sipping my peppermint mocha...

And of course, holiday with delicious food! My favorite at the Xmas lunch: Macarons ice cream sandwiches: pumpkin, raspberry, and patassio...

Mmm...it's too obvious I'm a sweet-tooth huh??

busy time and Market SF

It's been a busy time since end of November...which I've been buried under by projects and upcoming finals! Just need to hang in one more week and then I can seriously go xmas shopping, prepare for the holidays and just enjoy! But until then, I'll remain dormant on my blog writing.

But at least one school unrelated thing that I did was to get my vintage button rings, lace earrings and "the date" necklace to sell at Market SF, a pop-up store at Hayes Valley in the city. The store also sells other awesome artists' amazing works that include jewelry, purses, pottery, art, and much more...should definitely check it out if you're in the area!

Through {shop, swap & blog}, I got to meet the lovely, talented Jenny Swanson, the creator of the inspirational Retrieval Project and beautiful shop here.

My package was the lovely "hello fine art print," which I really love. It just greets me!

In addition to the "hello fine print art", Jenny also included a surprise for me from her shop!

I'm loving Jenny's art prints and paintings, they are so full of inspirations, hope and love. Let's get to know Jenny and see where her inspirations come from:

Tell us about yourself. I’m a thirty-something wife and mom who loves to create things. I have four children (ages 12, 10, 4 and 1 ½) and one incredibly hard working and very talented husband (he’s pretty much my hero).

I love to work in different mediums and have just discovered my love for mixed media painting about a year ago. It’s been very therapeutic and empowering. For the past six months I’ve been interning with San Francisco artist, Mati Rose McDonough (matirose.com).

I attribute my love of fabric and sewing to my great grandma, Ruby Hart. (stay tuned on my blog for updates about my upcoming handcrafted line called jenuineruby).

My desire is that my artwork and handmade items are inspired, and that they encourage and bring a smile to those who see and use them.

I love my job, but ultimately want to be home full time again. I plan to grow my business online and locally enough to work from home exclusively as soon as possible.

What you get most out of having your own business? What I love most about owning my own business is the liberty I have in choosing how to spend my time, what to create, and having the time to spend with my family. I love that as my interests and ideas change, I have total freedom to refocus my efforts.

Your favorite independently owned online shop? My favorite place to “window shop” is the front page of etsy.com. I occasionally click on the “see even more recent items” and swoon over things that I’d love to order.

invasion of the flies

The warm weather at the last couple of days has somehow brought an invasion of flies into my apartment. I've been trying to rid of them spraying Windex on them...and just as I thought I've gotten rid of the last fly, I see another one, then another one, flew by. It's driving me totally insane. I don't even know where they come from either!!

I'm usually not violent and I don't blog about pesky insects. But I think I'm at the point that I wish I have a shotgun of some sort and do this:

one of the best parts about working near the ferry building: the farmer's market every Tuesday and Thurday. not just organic or home-grown fruits and veggies but also good food!

It's going to be now called Jasemin. Was going to open my shop this weekend, just right before my fall semester starts. But at least I got the logistics worked out. I'll just need to put up my items for sale! I'm now aiming it to open for next weekend! It's coming!

a productive weekend

Yes, I've changed my blog template again due to issue with the comment post on the prior template. Didn't know how to fix it. So might as well change the entire template. It seems to work fine now. Hopefully no more problems on that.

Had to study for my online class final this weekend (yes with a nice cold Bloody Mary and no, I'm not alcoholic; it just makes me more relaxed since I'm trying to cram in all the materials).

But got to do something fun between my studying --making pretty packages for this lovely gifts exchange. Something that I can be creative about!

I'm just hoping the lavender would not be crushed when it reaches to my swap partner.

I was testing out the unused stamps at work. And I thought, hey, I could use stamps as patterns for the package!

And with any pretty papers, you can practically wrap and transform any ordinaries (like the yellow No. 2 pencils) into something unique. This DIY came from design*sponge.

Had a great time at the Indie Mart today! Great items found and loving the hand-made jewelry and vintage western tube top I got! Awesome to find out that some of these vendors are also selling on etsy!

I'm also loving this lovely dress-the fabric and color, everything!. After Indie Mart, my friend and I also went to this new store New People that just opened yesterday in Japantown.

Though Lolita is not exactly my style but I'm loving the cute, lacey tank tops and accessories. Besides that, there are also other fantastic bookstore (with cute home decor and stationary!) and awesome shoe store.

(You'll have to excuse me for the yellowish lighting in the display.)

I wish this pair of shoes have women's sizes!

The store also has an art gallery on the top floor, which I missed! Definitely will be going back there soon!

Thank goodness this week is finally over! It was a way busy and long week. Had to work late for the past few days. But glad that I got to do happy hour today--could really use a drink while enjoying the sunset.

Am excited for the weekend, especially this Sunday for the Indie Mart in the city! Can't wait to go shopping for the handmade and vintage goodies and check out the DIY demos!

My weekend was lovely meeting and catching up with old friends over a cup of hot chocolate at my favorite local coffee house. Friends from high school and college, to be precise.

It was nice but sad to realize how old we are in our mid-twenties after reminiscing and talking about the high school and college days. Actually, I also went to middle school with one of them! So that's even more than an ancient decade ago! And just to think that high school reunion will be in just about 5 years...gosh!

And like time, the weekend flew by as well. But thank goodness I'm greeted with sunny and blue sky this morning.

Hopefully, it'll be sunny and blue sky everyday. That'll help get me through the week at least. Have a good week!

I'm discovering so many design blogs out there these days, all filled with unique, creative, beautiful photographs, papers & stationary, jewelry, and home decor things!

This one in particular, tea for joy, is having a competition for its new store opening Papermash. And the prize: one year's worth of stationary! How cool is that?! Pretty stationary & notebook & illustrative tapes (I want those lace tapes!). That's also pretty clever way to spread the words about your new store.

Blue Danube Coffee

I found a local Blue Danube coffee shop in my neighborhood today. Awesome and stylish place to hang out or to enjoy some alone time. They have Mexican hot chocolate that I have yet to try next time!

The single shot of Michatto was pretty strong... suddenly reminded me of a show I watched in which the main character said, "most of the time life gives you a cup of dark, bitter coffee, but you can always add some sugar, or milk to it...it's pretty much how you make it taste better." Mm... very true!

Trauma at Embarcadero

Apparently, there was a crash incident at the Embarcadero plaza today...

But...it was on the set on the upcoming TV series Trauma. They've been filming since yesterday. Didn't get to see the actual filming of the crash scene. Too bad!

I was really tempted to walk into the filming area though.

But I did see some good looking actors (who play the cops) of the show. No wonder all the cops standing here are tall and good looking!

Couldn't get as closed as I would to... and the pictures are taken on my cell, not in good quality either. Actually, I can't wait to watch the series, which comes out in this fall. I hear that the whole series will be filmed in the city. I wonder where's the next location they'll film at!

I was planning to go on a more healthy diet after the BBQ/oysters weekend but I guess I'm not starting this week. I would think I'd eat more when I get stressed out. But I probably ate as much when I have the free time and more breaks at work...

Had for lunch today: "Diana's special meat pie", Hunan cuisine but tasted very American-like: fried pancakes sandwiching lettuce and tasty minced pork.

And for dessert few days ago...Madeline's cakes for afternoon tea with coworkers! Yum...

I should seriously make myself run and exercise this weekend after all those calories intake...

Oysters Weekend!

Had such a nice weekend at Tomales Bay! Almost didn't want to get up to work today (which was foggy cold in SF.)

Barbeque and oyster feast! Had so much food...I probably ate at every hour. Guess it's time to go on a diet?!

We took Highway 1 back to the city from Tomales Bay...curvy, winding Highway 1...

very beautiful coastal views along the way but a pain to drive through...

surprisingly, I didn't feel nauseated trying to capture the scenery.

July First Entry

Haven't updated here...been either too busy or too lazy. It's already mid-July, and this is my first July entry.

Time just flew by so quickly that the first half of 2009 is gone!! And it's mid-week already. Guess I'm having one of those moments reflecting "What have I done and been doing??"

Really like the flower arrangement here btw. This was taken at my favorite froyo place.

In love with lavenders

Saw bouquets of lavenders at the farmer's market today!! Smell so refreshing in my living room right now. I'd tried to grow them from seeds before but perhaps the San Francisco weather too cold for that.

Someday, just someday, I'll visit the lavender farms in Australia...or own and take care of one when I retire...that'll be totally awesome!

Project 101 Accomplished!

The birthday cake is done!! My creative accomplishment this weekend! It wasn't easy without a sewing machine...I think I'd become cross-eyed sewing it piece by piece in the process.

This is meant to be a surprise for my friend's birthday, so I'm sharing a bird's eye view of it...the cake right now looks more a bit different because I've added some decorations to it. Hopefully, she'll like it!

Wedding bells are ringing everywhere--I hear about it either from coworkers and friends who are attending weddings, or from bloggers blogging about weddings, or from my cousin who just got engaged!

While reading through the Design*Sponge blog, I came across this really creative wedding invitation (click on the invite to enlarge):

This practically saves a lot of time from re-telling the story to relatives and friends on how they met, what they went through to their wedding vows...When I get marry (in the far, far future), I wanna do this too for my wedding invites!

I had this yummy BLT sandwich and garlic fries for lunch today...great comfort food to end this week. The opposite set is what my co-worker had: cheeseburger and sweet potato fries! mmm...not to be gross but I still have the garlic taste in my mouth as I'm writing.

My first summer project: a birthday cake for a friend's upcoming birthday...

no flour or sugar--just felt, needle and threads...

So far I've made the strawberries!

Now, onto the body of the cake...which it's a bit difficult. Hopefully, it'll turn out good!

Nightlife at the museum

I finally got to see the new building of Academy of Sciences...at a nightlife event with live music and alcohol...it's what make science awesome! The museum has always been my favorite since I was little. Ah, so happy to see it finally. Too bad not all exhibits were opened at night though.

I've eaten out a lot over this week....

This time is blueberry tart, colorful mochi, cheesecake bits, strawberries, lychee poppers, and strawberry-flavored flowery and chocolate sprinkles...mmm...

then buttery, flaky, warm apple turnover...

Dinner at one of my favorite Japanese restaurants...yummy sushi rolls and Nabeyaki Udon

I can see spring even though today's windy weather in San Francisco doesn't feel like it. Flowers are blossoming, leaves are peeking out from branches...so nice...

This photo was taken in Japan just last x'mas. Now that I look at it now, doesn't it seem like heaven is sending a message from above?

I'm not religious. But I'd prefer to think there is recarnation, that people who died will be reborn as a new person who will get to go through life again--like getting a second take.

I hope my dear grandmother is now reborn to a better, happier life.

One of my favorite songs was my favorite muscial of all times, The Sound of Music:

The start of 2009 had been depressing, especially since the sudden loss of my grandmother. I guess that was the turn that made me think about life and what I really want to do...

Honestly, what I really want to do is not what I've been doing. I missed writing, being creative, and looking at beautiful and inspirational designs and things. I guess this is why I start this blog now--a blog for all things beautiful, creative, and unique that I like and admire.

It’s time to begin exercising the right side of my brain. That was a resolution for 2009. And now I’m finally getting to it.
